| Sites in State Care | owned by or in guardianship of EHS |
| Scheduled sites | scheduling is a specific legal protection of sites - scheduled sites are privately owned & not normally accessible to the public. However the site owner must obtain Scheduled Monument Consent from EHS before commencing any works which alter these sites in any way |
| Listed sites | listing is a legal protection, similar to scheduling, for buildings and requires owners to gain Listed Building Consent from EHS for any work which would alter the building in any way. |
| State Care and Scheduled | many State Care sites have an additional scheduled area around them to protect a wider area which may include associated features. |
